The Swiss Center for Automotive Research („swiss CAR“) is proud to announce the 7th Lean Management Summit Switzerland 2013 in close collaboration with the Lean Management Institute of Switzerland. Since 2007, the summit has brought lean experienced speakers from a variety of industries to share their knowledge on topics ranging from Lean in Product Development to Lean Production and Lean Administration. This year, speakers from companies, such as Emmi Käse AG, Syngenta AG, Belden Inc., Tenneco Inc., COMET AG and Endress+Hauser Flowtec will present their lean insights on the conference day. Upfront on June 10, introductory workshops will take place including Basics in Lean Production & Lean Administration. Subsequently on June 12, workshops will be held focusing on Lean Construction (held in English) and Value Stream Mapping. The summit will be conducted in German. Lean Management Summit Schweiz mit renommierten Referenten aus Wissenschaft und Praxis. Seit 2007 findet der Summit jährlich statt und vereint mit seinen erfahrenen Referenten eine Vielzahl an verschiedenen Industrien, als auch Praxisbeispielen, die sich mit Themen wie Lean in der Produktentwicklung, Produktion und Administration befassen. Am diesjährigen Konferenztag erwarten Sie spannende Vorträge von Referenten aus den folgenden Unternehmen: Emmi Käse AG, Syngenta AG, Belden Inc., Tenneco Inc., COMET AG und Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG. Einführende Workshops zu den Themen Basics in Lean Production und Lean Administration finden am 10. Juni 2013 statt. Vertiefende Workshops am Tag nach dem Summit (12. Juni 2013) runden das Programm ab. Am sogenannten Praktikertag werden die Inhalte Lean Construction und Value Stream Mapping vorgestellt. Alle Vorträge und Workshops werden auf Deutsch gehalten mit Ausnahme von Lean Construction (engl.). February 8 – 17, 2013

Stefano Brusoni, Seiji Manabe, Anja Schulze, Simge Tuna and Sonja Förster went on a research trip to Japan. The group was accompanied by Dag Raudberget, a researcher from Jönköping University in Sweden. The researchers visited Japanese automotive manufacturers, such as Mazda and Toyota,  as well as Hitachi, a Japanese multinational engineering and electronics company. The on-site visits supported the group’s focus on innovation and new product development issues. In addition, research seminars were held at the University of Tokyo (Manufacturing Management Research Center) and Hitotsubashi University with attendants from several Japanese research institutions. The seminars included the presentation and discussion of current papers. The research trip was supported by Yokohama National University.

Anja Schulze and Stefano Brusoni participated in the panel 'Integrating knowledge about knowledge integration', coordinated by Fred Tell (Linkoping University) and with the participation of Rob Grant (Bocconi University).


Daniella Laureiro-Martinez chaired two sessions at the Strategic Society Meeting in Prague (October 6-9, 2012). In one of the sessions, entitled “Cognition and Capabilities”, researchers presented ongoing work on the abilities necessary for adaptation to changing environments. In the other, entitled “Management of Emerging Strategic Issues”, researchers presented three papers addressing the same underlying problem: how do managers deal with novel problems that arise under extreme changes (e.g. a market crisis or a market shock by the entry of a new player) and anticipate future conditions?

Florian Rittiner and Stefano Brusoni participated in the 2012 SEI Doctoral Consortium, organized by the Copenhagen Business School. The SEI Doctoral Consortium gathers a group of about 25 PhD students from various European universities and gives them the opportunity of having their work discussed by scholars from HEC Paris, Imperial College Business School, CBS, Bocconi University, Warwick, ETH, EPFL and many others. The next Doctoral Consortium will be organized in London, at Imperial Business School.

On June 7, 2012 preceding the SMS Special Conference in Singapore, Daniella Laureiro-Martinez participated in the Strategic Management Society (SMS) Faculty Workshop held on the campus of Singapore Management University.

In the same conference, on June 9, 2012 Daniella presented her ongoing research –joint work with her coauthors S. Brusoni, M. Zollo, and N. Canessa- on the antecedents of entrepreneurial decision-making at a session titled “Antecedents of Entrepreneurship and Creativity”.

On June 6, Stefano Brusoni participated in the ‘Learning Managers Forum’ organized by the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC), in their campus in Turin (Italy). The meeting convened about 50 UN senior personnel to discuss recent trends and developments in managerial training and education. The Chair of Technology and Innovation Management held a Lean Management Workshop today in cooperation with Prof. Arnaldo Camuffo from the Department of Management and Technology of the Bocconi University. Professor Camuffo presented his latest paper on lean management (Camuffo, A; Gerli, F: What Do Lean Managers Do? Modeling Management Behaviors In Lean Production Environments) and discussed the PhD projects with the team.

Stefano Brusoni, Seiji Manabe, Florian Rittiner, Anja Schulze, and Simge Tuna went on a research trip to Japan. The group was accompanied by Ludvig Lindlöf and Björn Söderberg, researchers from Chalmers University in Sweden. The researchers visited several Japanese automotive manufacturers and suppliers and investigated on innovation and new product development issues. Moreover, two research seminaries were held at Hitotsubashi University and at Yokohama National University with attendants from a number of Japanese Research Institutions. Current papers were presented and discussed at the seminars.
This research trip was supported by Yokohama National University.

Swiss CAR’s LEAP project has been selected by the team Euresearch to be the next Success Story. LEAP stands for Lean Product Development and the objective of this research project is to better understand how lean management practices contribute to efficiency in new product development. It is a four year project with several automotive suppliers as industry partners and it receives funding from the EU.

Cesar Uparela Acosta started his stay as a visiting PhD student at IESE Business School – Universidad of Navarra. During his visiting scholarship, he will work with Professor Antonino Vaccaro, who is the academic director of the Centre of Business in Society at the IESE. The goal of this research cooperation between the ETH and IESE is to combine the research streams of ethics, technology and innovation management in order to develop a holistic framework for his research project “Bottom of the Pyramid Innovation Strategies for Mature Industries”.

The swiss CAR held the yearly LEAP project Advisory Board Meeting in Stuttgart. All project partners and two researchers from Chalmers University (Sweden) attended a Lean PD simulation, lead by Dr. Hugh McManus from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Hasse Johansson, former VP of R&D of Swedish truck manufacturer Scania, held a presentation on Lean Product Development. Prof. Sobek, currently working at Chalmers University, attended the meetings as well, providing valuable insights on set based engineering and visualization in product development. We will continue and deepen our collaboration with all institutions.

Anja Schulze was invited to the Innovation Forum Switzerland - Germany on ‘Sustainable Mobility’ which was held in Schaffhausen. The meeting was headed by Swiss National Council member Johann N. Schneider-Ammann and German Federal Minister of Education and Research Annette Schavan, who advocated for increased cooperation between the two countries on innovation policies towards a sustainable, resource-and energy-efficient economy and society. The meeting featured experts and main actors and stakeholders in the area of "sustainable mobility" from Switzerland and Germany, especially from the states of Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria. Workshops were held in the areas of "e-mobility", "mobility strategies" and "innovative vehicles". Anja Schulze was invited for and participated in the third workshop.

Anja Schulze gave an invited presentation on “German and Swiss thoughts and activities to meet the new automotive world” at the IMVP’s ‘International conference for the Smart Automotive Industry and Business Eco-System’, which was held at the Catholic University in Seoul, November 24 -26, 2011. Themes discussed were how the industry approaches ultra-lightweight vehicles and to what extent current strategies will be effective, the robustness of supply chains in the light of interruptions caused by natural catastrophes, supply chain risk management in the Korean automotive industry, or the possibility of Hyundaism among others. On November 26, 2011 the conference participants visited the Hyundai Mobis plant in Jincheon, South Korea.
